A 69-year-old garbage truck driver has died in hospital after an early-morning crash between two trucks in a small town west of Melbourne on Monday.
Key points:
- Police said thick fog affected visibility the morning of the crash
- One of the garbage truck drivers had been teaching the other man the route
- The 69-year-old died in hospital two days after being critically injured
Police said thick fog was hampering visibility as two garbage trucks travelled west along Mt Wallace-Ballark Road at Mount Wallace, near Bacchus Marsh, about 5.30am.
One of the drivers was teaching the other driver the route when the two trucks crashed, resulting in injuries that left the 69-year-old Melton South man in a critical condition.
The man was airlifted to the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Monday with life-threatening injuries and died in hospital on Wednesday evening.
Police say heavy fog reduced visibility in the lead-up to the Anzac Day crash.(ABC News)
The second driver, a 56-year-old Melton West man, was not injured in the crash.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash and preparing a report for the coroner.
WorkSafe is also investigating the cause of the collision.
